Whether you think twins are the cutest thing in the world or the idea of taking care of two infants at once sounds terribly exhausting, knowing the odds of conceiving twins may be helpful information. You can either use the tips below to your advantage, or to avoid having twins.

What Are the Odds of Having Twins Naturally?

According to Dr. Mark Trolice, a fertility expert and the director of the Fertility C.A.R.E center in Winter Park, Florida, your likelihood of conceiving twins naturally is about one to two percent. If you are on fertility medication, you have a higher chance of conceiving twins: almost five percent if you take the medication orally, and up to 20 percent if the medicine is injectable.

As for in-vitro fertilization, or IVF, Dr. Trolice says that "IVF has more control over reducing or increasing the risk of twins, since the process can limit the number of embryos transferred to the uterus. A single embryo transfer has a 1 percent risk of twins, but a double embryo transfer can result in a 40-50 percent risk of twins." However, there are some natural ways you can also increase your chances of conceiving twins.

Folic Acid

As one of the many B vitamins pregnant women should take, a folic acid supplement may increase your chances of conceiving twins. While the reasons are still unclear, Professor of Clinical Sciences Bength Källén of the Tornblad Institute in Lund believes "it is possible that folic acid somehow increases the probability of multiple ovulation or implantation of more than one egg."

When it comes to creating a daily intake regiment, the National Institutes of Health recommends adult women consume 400 micrograms, pregnant women consume 600 micrograms and lactating women consume 500 micrograms.

If you would like to increase your chances of conceiving twins, take a daily 400mg to 1000mg supplement and consume Vitamin B9-rich foods. (Taking more than the suggested amount of folic acid is not known to cause any harm to the body, as the excess is removed in the urine.) See the table below for a list of food sources of folic acid.

Although research examining the effects of folic acid on a mother's ability to conceive twins is limited, a study conducted by Källén and his team showed promising results.

Using records from the Swedish Medical Birth Registry, Källén discovered that the rate of twin births for 2,569 women who said they used folic acid supplements was 2.8 percent. To compare, the rate of twin births for the general Swedish population was 1.5 percent.

Products containing added growth hormones may cause increased ovulation.

Products With Growth Hormones

Everyone knows that almost all of the animal meats and products we buy at the supermarket include added hormones. One of the consequences of eating foods containing these added growth hormones is a higher chance of conceiving twins. So, if you are trying to conceive twins, skip the organic milk and go straight for the hormone-enriched brands.

According to a study published in the The Journal of Reproductive Medicine, increased ovulation in women is directly linked to consuming milk that contains growth hormones. American women who ate these dairy products were found to be five times as likely to give birth to fraternal twins than those who did not, due to higher rates of an insulin-like growth hormone (IGF) in their blood system. IGF has been shown to increase the rate of eggs released during ovulation. More eggs can equal more babies.

Birth Control

When you first discontinue birth control pills, or almost any form of hormonal birth control, your body is temporarily confused. It has to adjust to this "new normal" and most of the time it doesn't function exactly the way it is supposed to. During this transition, the chance of conceiving twins (or triplets, or more!) goes up.

Age

The older you are, the higher your chance of conceiving twins. In fact, being over 50 gives you pretty good odds for conceiving twins. But keep in mind, there are many health risks associated with pregnancy over the age of 35, and the potential dangers affect both the mother and the child.

The science behind the fact that the older you are, the more likely you are to have twins has to do with the ovaries' tendency to release more than one egg each month just before a woman enters peri-menopause. Another factor in this "fertility strike" has to do with an increased surge of estrogen that occurs during this reproductive stage.

If you are so desperate to have twins that you plan on waiting until you are over 45 or 50, weigh the risks, benefits, and side effects of your decision carefully. I would not encourage you to get pregnant later in life just for the sake of conceiving twins.

Wild Yams

The Yoruba tribe in Nigeria has been known to have an unusually high twin birth rate. When this tribe's diet was studied more closely at Lagos's University Teaching Hospital, it was discovered that a chemical in the cassava, a wild yam with a tuber root appearing in many of the tribe's dishes, may account for the high amount of twin births in the region.

The high levels of certain chemicals are thought to increase the number of eggs released during ovulation. One of the doctors at the hospital, in an article titled "Land of Twins" by the BBC, explained:

"Numerous works [have] shown that the tuber food of the Yoruba women, especially the peelings, contains a very large amount of these chemical substances. These women have a disproportionately large amount of these chemicals in their system and this encourages the release of more than one egg. There is enough reason to believe in this theory."

Because Nigerians have higher rates of twin births in general, it is hard to argue for the correlation between consuming wild yams and conceiving twins with any certainty. Still, the cassava may be one consumable that could heighten the likelihood that you birth twins. It can't hurt to try.

Family History

Identical twins are not genetic, but fraternal twins are, meaning they can run in the family. If you have a brother or sister who is a twin, or even a parent or grandparent, you have a higher chance of giving birth to fraternal twins.

Who Determines Twins: The Mother or the Father?

Only the mother's genes play a part whether a couple will birth twins. This is because the father's genes do not decide whether or not the mother's ovaries will produce two eggs for fertilization. This is determined entirely by the mother's genetic make-up, along with other factors like the ones listed in this article.

Do Twins Skip a Generation?

The idea that twins skip a generation is a myth. This falsehood may have arisen because men who inherent the gene for twins go unaffected by it–the gene for twins only comes into play when the mother is the carrier, as it is her genes which decide whether one or two eggs are produced. A man can pass the gene onto his daughter, increasing the likelihood she will give birth to twins. But to say that twins skip a generation is an illusion. The deciding factor is always the mother's genes.

Since you can't select your genetic history, this list item won't help you much, as far as finding ways to increase you chances of birthing twins goes. Still, if you have twins in your bloodline and didn't already know this interesting genetic fact, you may be more likely to conceive twins than you thought.

What Causes Twins to Form?

Twins are formed in two ways, and the way in which they are formed determines whether they will be identical or fraternal.

Identical Twins

Identical, or monozygotic, twins are formed when one fertilized egg splits into two separate embryos. They are always the same in gender and physical appearance, and are much more rare than fraternal twins. These babies receive identical genetic material and are still, in the modern age of medicine, considered miraculous.

Fraternal Twins

Fraternal, or dizygotic, twins are formed when two different eggs are fertilized by two different sperm. Put simply, fraternal twins are two babies that grew beside one another in the womb and were born on the same day. They are more common than identical twins, and can be of opposite genders. These twins may or may not resemble one another, in the same way siblings who are not twins may or may not look alike.

When Is the Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test?

The accuracy of a pregnancy test depends on a couple factors, such as the testing method and the time at which you choose to conduct the test.

The day after the date of your expected period is the best time to take a pregnancy test for accuracy. Taking a pregnancy test on the day of your expected period is the second most accurate. If you take a test before or after these two days, the probability is higher that the results are false.

Once you decide the date of your pregnancy test, the best time of day to take the test is early in the morning, using your first morning urine.

What Are the Chances of Receiving a False Negative Pregnancy Test Result?

If you've missed your period and continue to receive a negative result from your pregnancy tests, chances are you are not pregnant. Receiving a negative result a week after your missed period indicates that your chance of being pregnant is less than two percent.

Still, there are a few reasons why you may have gotten a falsely negative result. These include:

You miscalculated when your period was due
You took the test too soon
There was not enough hCG (the hormone that indicates pregnancy) in your test sample

If you think you may have received a false negative, wait a week and take the test again. At this point, your results should be accurate.

"Am I Pregnant With Twins?"

While it is hard to know for sure whether or not you are pregnant with twins, there are some signs and symptoms that may indicate whether you are carrying one or two babies during the first trimester.

Some common signs that you are pregnant with twins include:

Elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)
Strong nausea and morning sickness
Extreme fatigue
Quick weight gain
Large baby bump
Early sense of fetal movement

While there is a lot of information in this article, it's not all entirely factual. The facts listed aren't entirely true. This is the problem with .com's providing medical advice. The risk of Down's Syndrome increases with the age of men. Not Women. Other birth defects increase with the age of women. Until the age of fertility treatments, conceiving twins was not considered a medical miracle at all, in fact it was considered a genetic abnormality. Its not truly supposed to happen. Twins are indeed a genetic occurrence. Why else would it happen frequently in one family and not at all in another? It's been true on my dad's side--twins galore but not on my moms--not one..err two. Often times it is a hormone issue that causes two eggs to be released but not always. and it does increase with age because the body rids itself of eggs faster as it gets closer to menopause(also when hormones are wacky). And for the record, I'm not just pulling this out of nowhere. I'm in Medical Research. I study this and more all the time. What is the obsession with having twins? Shouldn't one be happy with what they get, especially when others can't have any?

Although I admit, I find the hormone/dairy factor so unsettling. It certainly makes sense that this increases your changes of double/triple ovulating, but still another reminder of our responsibility to monitor exactly what we're feeding ourselves & family.

My youngest two are twins, and although my husband and I don't eat meat or dairy the OB did mention that people with healthy eating habits & active lifestyles in general tend to have higher twin pregnancy rates.
